How to Train Your Dog on an electronic Containment Fence Many people who install an electronic containment fence for their pets tend to overlook the most important task to make the fence effective...training. If you were to ask the people who claim that their electronic containment fence "didn't work", you will find that they most likely did not train their dogs properly to the extent that they should have. Below is a brief set overview of the steps that will need to be taken to ensure a safe and happy dog. For more detailed information, click on the links below. Step One: Introducing Your Dog to the Fence Time Frame: Approximately 1 week This is the most crucial step of the training. During this training period, it is imperative that the dog is taught that when they hear their collar beeping, they need to retreat back into the yard. Step Two: Introducing Your Dog to the Correction Time Frame: Approximately 1 week During this week , the owner of the dog will be tested as well. This week, the owner must be able to show the pet that the consequences of not retreating when they hear the beep will result in a specified level of correction. Step Three: Introducing Your Dog to Distractions Time Frame: One Day This day of the training process should be filled with distractions for your dog. Use tennis balls or other dogs as distractions as a way to lure your dog to the fence to teach them to stay away from the fence no matter what may lie on the other side. Step Four: Supervision Time Frame: Approximately 1 Week By this time, your dog should be trained but will still need some oversight. During this time, do not let your dog cross the boundary line for any reason. If you must take the dog for a walk, put them in your car and drive them over the boundary line.
